One of the foremost regions for growing jute is the various reaches of the Ganges delta. Here some of the best quality jute is produced in abundance. The jute plant is actually a variety of Hibiscus that responds enthusiastically to the warm, wet and humid climate that is a feature of Western India, Bangladesh, Thailand and China. The Hibiscus cannabinus also grows in abundance in Africa. Nevertheless, the copious crops of the best quality of jute are harvested from the Jat region of the Ganges Delta. Similar species of plant are also harvested for commercial production of jute, although the quality is not as good. Corchorus olitorius results in a dark jute often known as tossa, whilst a white jute is harvested from the Corchorus capsularies plant. Jute is also known by various other names: Ambari; Bimli; Kenaf; Kosta, Mesta; Nalita; and Pat. Commercially, however, jute is the name most widely known.
