Baisakhi marks the beginning of spring and end of the harvest season. Punjabis consider the first day of Vaisakh as New Year. According to zodiac the day also marks the sun entering Aries or Mesh (Mesh Sankranti). On 13th April usually and 14th April, after every thirty six years, this occasion coincides with the festivals of Naba Barsha in Bengal, Rongali Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Pooram Vishu in Kerala.
Sikhs and other devotees start early and reach the nearest Gurudwara with flowers and offerings. The Golden Temple at Amritsar is decorated for this occasion. Also Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth guru of the Sikh cult) founded the Akal Khalsa on this day.
