Information on Punjabi Festival Baisakhi.
Punjab's Baisakhi (13th April)

This is a harvest festival celebrated in the agri-rich state of Punjab, which marks the New Year for the Punjabis who are predominantly found in the northern parts of India. Popular dances like the Giddha and the Bhangra are performed in the backdrop of the throbbing rhythm of the 'dhol'. For the Sikhs, this day marks the founding day of the Khalsa (the Sikh brotherhood) by Guru Govind Singh Ji. Few people realise that this is also the day on which Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Hindu sect of the Arya Samaj. For the Buddhists, this is the day when Gautama Buddha is supposed to have attained his enlightenment (nirvana).

Baisakhi marks the beginning of spring and end of the harvest season. Punjabis consider the first day of Vaisakh as New Year. According to zodiac the day also marks the sun entering Aries or Mesh (Mesh Sankranti). On 13th April usually and 14th April, after every thirty six years, this occasion coincides with the festivals of Naba Barsha in Bengal, Rongali Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Pooram Vishu in Kerala. Sikhs and other devotees start early and reach the nearest Gurudwara with flowers and offerings. The Golden Temple at Amritsar is decorated for this occasion. Also Guru Gobind Singh (the tenth guru of the Sikh cult) founded the Akal Khalsa on this day.

Gifts such as idols and posters of Guru Gobind Singh, Guru Nanak, Golden Temple, sweets and gift hampers are gifts on Vaisakhi day. Corporate and promotional gifts for this occasion!
