Gudi Padwa is celebrated in Maharashta on the first day of Chaitra and as Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The festivity also signifies the beginning of Vasant or the season of spring.

A Gudi (pole) is covered with a colorful cloth and decorated with marigold flowers, mango leaves and coconuts that signify nature's gift. People eat bittersweet neem leaves or paste of neem leaves mixed with ajwain, gul (jaggery) and tamarind. This purifies blood. In Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, this Ugadi festiival includes preparation of an elaborate sauce known as Ugadi Pachchadi which includes neem, jaggery, raw mango and tamarind juice.
