Information on Lohri
Lohri and Maghi are a festival that marks the harvesting of winter (Rabi) crops. The event usually falls on the 13th of January every year. This day also signifies the earth coming out of Dakshinayan and the Paush month of Hindu calendar. The earth enters the new month of Magh and turns towards the sun (Uttarayan). Though this fete is predominantly celebrated in north India, Hindus believe that Lord Krishna reveals himself in his complete magnificence. Punjabis sing in honor of Dulha Bhatti. People gather around a bonfire, throw puffed rice and popcorn and pray the fire God or Agni, for abundance and prosperity. Popular folk songs and the bhangra and gidda dance, exchange greetings and gifts, eatables such as the Prasad - til, gajak, jiggery, peanuts and popcorn, accompany the bonfire ritual. An opportunity for merriment in this fast -paced world and thanksgiving to Almighty, people exchange gifts such as sweets, greetings, toys and novelties.
