The Panchang - the Hindu almanac, is the most reliable method of calculating dates of festivals and auspicious events. The word 'panchang' essentially means a combination of five ('panch') parts ('ang'). It is used to calculate all the planetary influences that govern most of our religious ceremonies. It is an amalgamation of the lunar and solar calendar calculations. However, there are some holy months like the Chaitra that are common both in the lunar and solar cycles. Many states in India believe that it is during the auspicious month of Chaitra that the new year begins. Some people refer to this day as the 'yugadhi', which means the commencement of an era ('yuga').
