Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated dominantly in Tamil Nadu. The event is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Thai (January/February). Goddess Parvati gave her youngest son Murugan the lance to overcome the evil demons, and this day is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Murugan or Lord Subramaniam.
Pilgrims carry pots of milk (kavadi or burden) and pierce the skin, tongue and cheeks with lance skewers. A celebration of this festival on1st of February 2007
